Eighth International Summer School of

JUMPING GEORGIAN

There are times during the Georgian State Dance Company’s glittering, fast-paced performance when the stage seems barely able to contain the fifty or so dancers. Presided over by thf mother and son team of Nina Ramishvili and Tengiz Sukhishvili, this internationally famous folk troupe combines grace and sensational prowess with spectacle. The sexes are sharply divided in what they can or cannot do. The women, royally bedizened, rarely get to kick up their heels. Instead these glacially impassive seductresses glide about under floor-length skirts and headdresses like miniature temples, trailing gossamer veils and the perfume of pulchritude. The men have all the virile flash, whether leaping phenomenally high and landing on their knees with a tirelessly hearty, Slavic-macho masochism, or playing with knives, sabres and, in one Iowbrow comic number a football. Yet they also exhibit becoming delicacy when partnering the women, stepping about on their toes in unblocked, skintight boots. In these mating rituals even the couples“ clothes never touch; it's a carefully eroticized, supremely elegant human equivalent of what you can see going on between pigeons in the park every day.

Most of the novelty and dazzle wears

off by the second half, and more than a few show biz touches strain the notion of authenticity. Ultimately, the whole thing comes across as overly schematic, as if the performers' energies and an audience's presumed ecstatic response were pre-programmed. But there is much to admire and delight in here, and the costumes alone merit a visit.
