Miniature Masterpieces: Lacquer work from the USSR 25 July-5 Sept.

Part ofthe Edidnburgh International Festival. this exhibition continues its theme of celebrating the arts of Russia. An immensely fine and intricate technique. Palekh was the village most renowned for its skill in this area and it is from here that the work on view comes. It is the first major showing of this work in the UK.

Child’s Play Until Sat 5 Sept. An exhibition which will complement the exhibits at the Museum of Childhood round the corner. Playthings frotn the 19th century to the present day. Puppet Shows and activities have been organised throughout the exhibition. so get in touch for details. Admission charges will be donated to the Save the Children Fund.

going to come to the gallery and make an installation for the new space upstairs. However he died before he was able to do so. Two hundred previously unexhibited works from the collection of Caroline Tidsall (see below) will be shown together with work by the French Gerard Gasiorowski. who died the same year as Beuys. Ricky Demarco was the first to show both artists in Britain at the beginning of the 70s.

Witches Point: History of the Landscape 1 Aug-5 Sept. Photos by Paul Vlissingen and text by Caroline Tidsall of Witches Point. a remote spot on Loch Maree. Journalist (former Guardian art critic) turned filmmaker. Caroline Tidsall has recently completed a Channel Four film on Beuys (see above).

1600-1914 This new museum. dedicated to that well-known figure in kilt and sporran carrying musket or pipes. includes twenty-two fully dressed Scottish soldiers who have been specially tnade. lifelike down to every whiskery chin and set in displays dating from the early 17th to early 20th centuries. When you reach the cannons at the castle wall. look for two unruly sentries flanking the museum entrance. Just try and make them blink.

Order of the Thistle Exhibition Until end summer. An exhibition celebrating the Most Noble Order of the Thistle. a purely Scottish Order ofChivalry dating back to the 17th century. A magnificent green mantle. showered with golden thistles. was made to honour these knights and takes centre position in this display.
