The three Dundonians that make up Danny Wilson (Kit and Gary Clark and God

PDPU '- l iterates

people to stir up leelings ol intense hatred or love- but their debut album, ‘Meet Danny Wilson' seems to have done just that.

The reviews in the music press ranged from ‘Piping Hot‘ (Smash Hits) throughto ‘Gawd almighty, this makes Curiosity Killed The Cat sound like a rap bandl' (NME). Radio producers in this country shunned theirlirst two singles, while theirAmerican counterparts took them to heart. Danny Wilson are now a top 40 pop band inthe States. thanks to their single ‘Mary’s Prayer‘ -which has just been re-released in this country.

The American success means a tourwith Simply Red in the Autumn, and the provisional plan is lorthem to playa wann-up gig at Fury Murrys in Glasgow 20 August, beiore leaving these shores (no doubtwith dollar signs in their eyes!). it isin the live arena that Danny Wilson excel, as their recent tour with the Christians seemed to prove.

The album was certainly a competent debut- some great songs, and some obvious pieces oi musical sell-indulgence, butthe live show was a revelation. An audience at around titty disinterested students were rapidlytranslorrned into tans, judging bythe reaction when they played in Glasgow. It was certainly one ol the most absorbing pertormances I have seen by a Scottish band this year, and the live situation gave less space for the occasional moments at musical indulgence that spoiled the album.

However, lor every person that hails Danny Wilson as the best thing lrom Dundee since Billy McKenzie, there are an equal number willing to knock them as third rate Steely Dan clones. When I spoke to vocalist, Gary Clark he had answers ready lor such critics.

‘i think as a band we have a reallywide range ol inlluences- and obviously Steely Dan have cropped up. I actuallylind such

comparisons very llattering. I really love Steely Dan, especially the range and depth at emotion in Fagan's voice.‘

Judging Danny Wilson purely on their album is maybe a bit unlair. the problem, it any, with it being perhaps caught up in Clark's admission: ‘l think we probablytook longer over recording it than we should have,‘ and it is only in the live contextthat songs like ‘Aberdeen‘, and ‘Davy’ reallytake on signilicance, reflecting lavourably on Clark’s songwriting talent.

Having already lound success in America, the re-release oi ‘Mary’s Prayer' -thelrmost accessible, and probably theirlinestsong, could take them chartwards in this country as well.
