Top horror writer Clive Barker moves eltorllessly and impressively into film-making with this assured cinematic debut. Frank Cotton (Sean Chapman) buys a mysterious puzzle box in an Eastern bazaar and searching torthe ultimate pleasure he believes it will afford him, he unleashes the Cenobites, a gaggle of S&M lreak demons from another dimension who proceed to grant his desires with an eternity of exquisite pain. Until, that is, his brother Larry (Andy Robinson) unwittingly releases him from torment by accidentally spilling blood from a small out between the floorboards where Frank’s battered remains are languishing. Soon Larry’s wile Julia (Claire Higgins) is helping him regenerate his way to lull health, with a view to resuming theirtorridly pervy altairtruncated years ago by the marriage, by procuring more blood from a series of unsuspecting victims. and special effects that serve the storyline (rather than the other way around). There's a welter of aberrant sexual and psychological conotations for those who wish to follow them up, and several wry one-liners torthose who don’t. True, the mid-Atlantic accents required by the American producers and subsequent geographical uncertainty do make for moments of clumsiness, but the imaginative visual sensibility that creates shards of sheer palpitation like the genuinely shocking finale easily makes up for such minor blemishes.

Continuing the tradition of fantasy movie-making in this country that has stagnated since Hammer ceased production is laudable enough in itself, but to create a work of such visceral originality that stands comparison with the work of American maestros such as Romero or Craven is something to get excited about.
