PATRICK STREET

Glasgow has Robin Williamson in two evenings of music, poems, stories and song (25, 26 Sept) and the first visit of two major bands. Mara (19 Sept) are a new wave folk band, originally from Australia, with the eponymous female vocalist, Jim Denley on flute and sax, and Llew Kiek on guitar. They have evolved a multicultural roots music, sophisticated and rhythmically complex dance tunes and songs from Bulgaria, the Middle East, Spain, Italy and even some ‘trad’ Australian. Mara herself has one oi the most beautiful voices around and the group line-up is completed by the legendary bassist Danny Thompson. The ex-Pentangle bassist has a line solo album just released on Hannibal records. The other major event has Patrick Street paired with Dssian in Glasgow (27

Sept) and with harpist Savourna Stevenson in Edinburgh (28 Sept). A recombination of the musical personalities that fired Planxty, The Bothy Band, and De Dannan, Patrick Street has the Ianguorous yet precise liddle of Kevin Burke, Jackie Daly’s punchy two row button box.

Irish guitarist by appointment to Van Morrison—Arty McGlynn, and the airy, decorated and sadness-tainted singing style of Andy Irvine. Their recent first album on Green Linnet slips down easily, not immediately arresting but more and more rewarding on subsequent hearings. The playing is all neat, clean, delicate and first class, but ittakes a stage performance to feel the full power that the foursome can generate on the instrumental side of the Street. (Norman Chalmers)
