WEDNESDAY 23 Glasgow

0 Breathe Tin Pan Alley, Mitchell Street. 10pm. Surrey based band, signed to Siren, who look very much like a stylised pop band, but have some great songs behind them. The current single is called ‘All That Jazz’ but they had afar superior single called ‘Jonah’ out earlier in the year. 0 Primal Scream andThe Thanes Rooftops, Sauchiehall Street. 10.30pm. Promoting their new, and possibly their best single to date, Imperial, Primal Scream can be sure of a large attendance at this gig. Train spotters, anorexics and anoraks mix with some real pop fans all human life will be there.

Edinburgh

0 The Primevals The Venue. Calton Road, 557 3073. 7.30pm. Noisy, Scottish and fairly good fun if you like it rough. Now on their third album, and there‘s a Peel Sessions LP out as well.

0 The Big Wheel Fresh, Waterloo Place, 556 2839. 9pm. Free. They try so hard to be the most commercial, poppy-sounding band around, but so far haven’t got the songs to go with it. Try them if you like that sort of thing.

0 Restless Natives Lord Darnley, West Port, 229 4341. 10pm. Free. Fairly commercial and accessible.

0 The Peristaisis Brothers Boston Bean Co, St James Centre, 556 0111. 8.30pm. Free. See Tue 22.

o The Rocky Honor Show King’s Theatre, Leven Street, 229 1201. 8pm. £6.50, £6, £5, £4.50, £3. Third night of six-night run. See Mon 21.

0 The Clyde Delta Bad Ass Club, Clyde Place, licensed till 1am, free. 0 Primal Scream Vikkis, Kilmarnock. 10pm. The mini Scottish tour continues. . .

O leeass Blackfriars, Bell Street. 9pm. Free.

0 Del Amitri Stirling University, Stirling. 9pm. Apparently pursuing a quite different approach since the departure of guitarist Brian Tolland to form the Hummingbirds (gigging soon).

0 21322 Kilroy Platinis at Furlongs, West Nile Street. 9pm. Free.

0 Billy Mclsaac Riverside Tavern, Waddell Court. 9pm. Free.

0 Apres Ski Jarvey‘s Inn, 45 Kelso Street. Clydebank, 941 2855. 9pm. Free.

Edinburgh

0 Public Image Ltd Playhouse Theatre, Greenside Place, 557 2590. 7.30pm. £6. £5. It so happens I quite like the stuff they’re doing these days, what I’ve heard of it anyway. The combination of Bill Laswell’s version of heavy metal and John Lydon’s unmistakable whine can be

pretty forceful. Avoid low-flying bottles if you’re near the front. Latest news is that this gig is in jeopardy, so check press nearer the date. Shame if their local support, Blood Uncles, didn’t get to play.

0 Ghost Dance The Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. 7.30pm. More Sisters of Mercy connections: namely Ghost Dance’s guitarist, a former member of the gloomy trio. With The Skeletal Family’s old singer as well, the bets are that it’s Siouxsie-lookalike time at The Venue tonight.

0 Big Blue World Fresh, Waterloo Place, 556 2839. 9pm. Free. Poppy. 0 Bon Ton Houlez Blues Basement, Broughton Street, 556 7147. 9pm. 0 Jump Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. 9pm. Free.

0 Los Supremos Canny Man’s, Morningside Road, 447 1484. 8.30pm. Free.

FRIDAY 25 Glasgow

0 The Primevals Boulevard Hotel, Great Western Road, Duntocher. 10pm. With a brand new album on New Rose soon, this should be worth seeing in the wake of their recent Heya single.

0 Ghost Dance Rooftops, Sauchiehall Street. 10.30pm. Ex Sisters of Mercy, Skeletal Family etc etc. And still you can be sure that they will appear in the music press saying that they are not goths.

o The Dead Loss Band Ultratheque, Wellington Street. 10pm. A night of nostalgia.

0 Loose but Tight Victoria Park, Whiteinch. 9pm.

0 Jamie Barnes and Cochise Platinis at Furlongs, West Nile Street. 9pm. Free. No late nights— they’ve got another gig tomorrow afternoon.

Edinburgh

0 Primal Scream and The Thanes The Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. 8pm. £4. The Thanes may be a brilliant garage band, but Primal Scream take us a little further into psychedelia, always taking care to attach it to a naive, wistful melody. Huge names on the indie scene, possibly huge all over soon.

0 Block Brothers Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after 9.30pm.

0 Wasted Days Rolling Stone, Greenside Place, 558 1270. 9.30pm. Appearance depends on availability ofvenue.

ATURDAY 26

Glasgow

0 Jamie Barnes and Cochise Viva‘s, Union Street. 1pm.

0 APB/The Same Animals Boulevard Hotel, Duntocher. 10pm. The Same Animals are one of the better unsigned local bands. while APB were a major disappointment when I saw them last year.

0 Dexter Slim and The Pickups \ Blackfriars, Bell Street. 9pm. Free. ‘Electric Blues’.

0 Ghost Dance Way Inn, Ayr. 10pm. Mini tour continues. . .

O Anaconda Platini‘s at Furlongs, West Nile Street. 9pm. Free. Residency.

Edinburgh

0 Randy Crawiord Playhouse Theatre, Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £9.50, £8.50,£7.50. A lady who should need no introduction. Should she? Good.

0 The Chills Speed 3, The Venue, Calton Road. 8pm. £3. Excellent tunesmiths, they’ve come all the way from New Zealand, leaving a respectable trail of45$ in their wake, to capture Britain’s hearts too. After that journey, it’s not too much to ask you to haul yourselves down to The Venue, is it?

0 After Eight Mince Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9pm. Free.

0 Bulb Cormorant Lord Darnley, West Port, 229 4341 . 3pm. Free. See Sat 19.

O Toto and The Bostons Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. 2pm. Free.

0 Little Wolves Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after 9.30pm.

0 The Rocky Horror Show King’s Theatre, Leven Street, 229 1201 . 6pm and 9pm. £6.50, £6, £5, £4.50, £3. Last night. See Mon 21.

0 Back Beat Clowns. High Street. 556 1830. 9pm. Free. Sean and Paddy take us through some old faves.

SUNDAY 27 Glasgow

0 The Barleycorns and Support Barrowland, 244 Gallowgate, 552 4601. Apologies for my ignorance but who the hell are the Barleycorns, and why are they playing at Barrowland? Why has there only been one advert for this gig— months ago? Will this gig take place? Will anyone go? Check with the venue.

a Squeeze and Apple Mosaic Pavilion Theatre, Renfield Street. 7.30pm. £5. The charts are a better place for Squeeze’s return even if the new album is not a touch on classic Squeeze. Apple Mosaic have a reasonable single out called Velvet Avenue. Worth going early to see them and make your own mind up. A recent Hold Tight appearance suggests a humour not dissimilar from that of the headlining band.

0 Red Letter Day Boulevard Hotel. Duntocher. 10pm.

o The Chills/T he Boy Hairdressers Rooftops. Sauchiehall Street. 10.30pm. If these bands told you that they were not goths (which they aren’t) would you believe them?
