FREE VORTEX

Greg Norman hangs up his clubs and heads for his favourite 19th. There he can find John Noakes and Neil Diamond amongst others, revealing the secrets of their success. Is it loboggan bruises. . . is it free vortex with every goal scored . . . is it the swish of Dan Dares on the dance floor. . . YES—it‘sthe Hotel Gassed All Weekendo!!! (The Mission, Victoria Street, Edinburgh). Open for a month and a bit, so larthe Hotel offers comedy, cabaret (rehearsed or otherwise), sandwiched between music from Mel Brooks to Motown and back. The proprietors, who can be spotted as the natty gents in flares and false sideburns, escortthe mixed bunch of fun seekers from 10pm till 3am, offering merry abandonment as an alternative to the other more fashion fanatic clubs in The Mission. Sample the humour in theirown fanzine, Shavers Weekly, but above all sample the atmosphere of the friendliest place in town. As the lads tell us, it's about drink, entertainment, value for money and out and out idiocy. (Stuart Baiker)
