return to torment our lantern-jawed hero in this ferociously funny comic horror. Edinburgh; Cannon

0 The Exterminating Angel (15) (Luis Bur'iuel, Mexico, 1962) Silvia Pinal. Enrique Rambal, Jacqueline Andere. 95 mins. Bufiuel lashes out at the bourgeoisie again with this waspish satire in which guests at a swanky dinner find they cannot bring themselves to leave and consequently begin to starve and die. Edinburgh; EUFS

o Ferris Bueller’s Day Oil ( 15) (John Hughes, US, 1986) Matthew Broderick. Mia Sara. Charlie Sheen. 103 mins. A sunny spring day in Chicago is too good to spend locked in a classroom, so the irrepressible Ferris Bueller feigns a malady. cuts classes and promises his two best friends a day to remember. Characteristically uneven slapstick Hughes teen comedy that scores with fresh dialogue and appealling characterisations. Edinburgh; EUFS O The Fly ( 18) (David Cronenberg, US. 1986) Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis. 96 mins. Brilliant, thought-provoking ‘reconceptualization‘ ofthe 1958 camp classic with a superb Goldblum as the scientist whose experiments with teleportation go disastrously wrong. Glasgow; Grosvenor

0 Full Metal Jacket (18) (Stanley Kubrick, US, 1987) Matthew Modine, Lee Ermey. Dorian Harewood. 109 mins. A group of raw recruits endure the dehumanising process of basic training under a foul-mouthed gunnery sergeant and then face the greater horror of Vietnam during the Tet offensive of 1968.

Technically highly proficient. Kubrick’s film lacks a heart and soul and is definitely not the classic Vietnam statement one might have anticipated from the maker of Paths of Glory.

Strathclyde; Odeon Ayr

0 Hall Moon Street (18) (Bob Swaim, US, 1986) Sigourney Weaver. Michael Caine, Patrick Kavanagh. 89 mins. Improbable but glossy and quite watchable thriller in which research assistant Weaver supplements her income as an escort and finds herself an unwitting pawn in an international conspiracy to discredit a leading British politician. Glasgow; Salon

0 He Died With His Eye: Open (18)

However. something doesn‘t ring true about her casual confesson. Asinine Gallic thriller. Edinburgh; EUFS O Headland (PG) (Richard Pearce. US. 1979) Rip Torn, Conchata Ferrell, Lilia Skala. 95 mins. Based on the diaries of a pioneer woman this is a simple but highly effective story of a young widow who accepts a job as housekeeper to rancher Tom in the wilds of Wyoming around 1910 and the rigours they face. Glasgow; GET 0 Hearts of Fire (15) a (Richard Marquand. US, 1987) Rupert Everett, Fiona, Bob Dylan. 95 mins. It‘s disrespectful to speak ill of the dead but Marquand’s final film is a titter-inducing dog‘s breakfast, an every-cliché-under-the-sun rock ’n' roll romantic triangle between sensitive pop idol Everett, golden oldie Dylan and pert, aspiring star Fiona. Everett is characterstically inept, Dylan so laidback one is surprised to see him upright and Fiona doesn‘t fall over the furniture at least. Movies. don‘t ya just love ‘em. Edinburgh; Cameo O Hellralser(18) (Clive Barker, US. 1987) Andy Robinson, Claire Higgins, Ashley Laurence. 92 mins. Gory, stomach-churning superior chiller from author turned filmmaker Barker. Adaptation of the Dostoevsky novel with Philippe's celebrated performance as Myshkin. the tormented idealist who unwittingly destroys others. Described by one contemporary critic thus: ‘tragic, romantic, full of pathos, stupefaction and nobility; evoking the essence, the Christ-like goodness, ifnot the full complexity of Dostoevsky‘s ldiot.’ Edinburgh; French Institute 0 Inspecteur Lavardln (15) (Claude Chabrol, France, 1986) Jean Poiret, Jean-Claude Bn'aly. 100 mins. This sequel to Cap au Vin involves Chabrol‘s wily, amoral sleuth in a murder case where the victim’s widow is an old flame. Totally ordinary whodunnit, barely worth the bother of remaining conscious for. Edinburgh; EUFS 0 Jean De Florette (PG) (Claude Berri, France, 1986) Gerard Depardieu, Yves Montand, Daniel Auteuil. 121 mins. First part of a magnificent two-film epic set in Provence during the 19205, telling a gripping yarn of elemental human emotions- love, greed, duplicity and
