JIMMY WITHERSPOON

Glasgow venue Gillespies is putting iazz on the back burner for the moment, perhaps promoting music in future only at weekends. Anyone wondering what to do any Thursday night can however nip along to the Riverside where the truly excellent Tam White and The Dexters are in residence. Their powerful electric blues with first class reeds, brass and the unmistakeable growl of Mr White is gutsy, intelligent and danced to. A genius of the blues and with no strict deiinition oi the genre is Jimmy Witherspoon (see photo). He is accompanied in Glasgow (7 Nov) and Edinburgh (6 Nov) by ex-Dexters tenor player Gordon Cruikshank with a quartet. Not from the Delta or the canyons of Chicago, Spoon has been keeping company with the great jazz names since taking up music professionally after a wartime spell in uniform. John Coltrane, Count Basie, Miles Davis and Coleman Hawkins are a few of the musicians who have played and recorded with this enduring performer. His 1949 recording oi Ain’t Nobody's Business was in the American charts for 34 weeks, and still holds the BBB/Soul record. Fans of good old-fashioned Dixieland and Swing have a seven-piece line-up

with Peanuts Hucko, clarinettist and saxophonist to Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong. Platform presents this All Star band with Hucko’s vocalist wife Louise Tobin in Edinburgh (30 Oct) and Glasgow (31 Oct). Another veteran of the American services, he found ‘The tenor was too awkward marching in said' . . . so he took up the clarinet, playing in Glenn Miller’s wartime Airforce Band. It has remained his speciality, and he is regarded as one of the leading living exponents. (Norman Chalmers)
