Lloyd Cole and the Commotions are back on the road again, appearing in Edinburgh at the Playhouse on Monday 9 Nov to promote their ‘difficult third LP’, Mainstream, now on the shelves. Lawrence Donegan, Commotions’ bassist, claims to be ‘so pleased with it. It‘s such a great record.‘
The tour and LP follow upheavals in The Commotions’ camp with the departure of their keyboard wizard Blair Cowan who founded the group with Lloyd in 1983, and to whom Mainstream is affectionately dedicated. Poor health on tour spurred his decision to leave, Lawrence says, ‘and now he‘s doing soundtracks for the BBC, who seem really keen on him. He‘s doing themes for quiz shows and things now.‘ Blair‘s place on the tour is to be taken by Dave Cummings and Ken Campbell, two fine session musicians.
The album, Lawrence explains, can be seen as following on from their first LP, Rattlesnakes, ratherthan the disappointing follow-up Easy Pieces, which he pointedly calls ‘the difficult second album’.
‘Easy Pieces‘ sounds rushed, some songs were ill-conceived, ill-finished. It‘s still quite a good record, though. The first album will stand up foryears,

Hard to label them. but thick-rimmed specs. stripey shirts and angst-ridden expressions give it all away. They are worth going to enjoy on their own — so it is a bonus that the band are well worth seeing too. Wouldn‘t ‘Letter From America‘ make a great Christmas No 1?

Six months were spent making Mainstream, and after an abortive session with Chris (Sex Pistols, Pretenders, Roxy Music) Thomas, the band settled on Ian Stanley, who had spent three years writing worldwide hits lorTears For Fears and now wanted to be a hotshot producer. Tracey Thorn pops up on guest vocals on one track, and Robbie Coltrane and Kate Murphy get a credit for ‘dialogue‘ on ‘Sean Penn Blues‘. ‘We got the dialogue from a scene in the film Double Indemnity,‘ explains Lawrence, ‘and changed a few words to avoid copyright problems, but it‘s still got the feel of the original.‘ It’s unfortunate then that it can barely be heard at all on the finished article. Nevertheless, The Commotions had a good time working with the Big Man of Scottish comedy. ‘He‘s a constant entertainment, always ioklng.‘
