Talbot nice, Edinburgh Sandy Fraser’s recent work does not recognise category. Wide marks sweep with the expression oi an abstract painter, while iigures toss about in space. Open seas oi paint which create great distance are suddenly narrowed by tiny spots oi colour, like the brightly coloured detail of a Japanese kimono. Fraser’s canvas becomes an experimental stage, exciting in its boldness and not to be underestimated. '

gallery show the vital source oi the larger paintings. The curl oi a shell is a fascination shared with ex-studio mate lan Howard and one which lends itseli to variation. It becomes helmet, head or elephant’s trunk. Some announce themselves under smiley titles like Spotted Whiskers Fraser’s energy has a humorous edge which can catch you unawares with wonderful timing. Others have the dark glow oi a Goya. Currently working in the North-East, Fraser nearing 501s an artist of great breadth and virtuosity. (Alice Baln)
