_ UP AND RUNNING —THE KELVIN HALL

The Kelvin Hall has been extensively returbished as a sports complex, set tor an otticial opening on 30 November, with the lirsl event, an open graded athletics meeting staged by tom Glasgow clubs, two days later.

The Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena will provide Scotland with its first ever purpose built 200m indoor athletics traclt, a development welcomed by sprinter Tom McKean, one of the athletes lilter to enjoy early benetit Irom the new Iacility.

‘The indoor arena here is the best thing to happen to Scottish athletics in years.‘

The athletes. however, will not be the only ones catered tor at the new Arena. Other Iacilities include a multi-purpose Sports Hall with seating Ior 1500 spectators, and a Sports Arena with 1200 seats and a playing area big enough to hold both a basketball and a volleyball match simultaneously, should anyone wish to do such a peculiar thing, all in addition to the

Museum at Transport housed within the building which opens next year.

The Arena is looking to attract as many prestige events as possible, and hopes to secure a major European athletics meeting in the spring, while the 1993 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships are already committed. The Kelvin Hall is situated in Argyle Street, directly opposite the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and is served by Glasgow Underground (Kelvin Hall).
