The McCalmans breezy patriotism and humour in harmony is on parade (Edinburgh 13th). Two more world travellers home at Hogmanay and starring at Glasgow's Star Club are Hamish lmlach (14th) and Ian McIntosh (Ztst). 605’ veterans, lsh and Tosh grow old with their fans, the former wielding a fine blues based guitar technique amid raunchy songs, the latter playing on quite a few instruments, but usually a delicately flailed banjo, and drawing a willing audience into gentle intimacy with songs like musical Farley’s Rusks. and more noises of the ‘greatest undiscovered artist’ sort. His is a unique talent on the guitar, acoustic or electric, and his music though oddly Celtic in flavour looks over its shoulder to everything from rock ’n’ roll to the baroque. One pianist he hankers after a recording date with is jazzman McCoy Tyner. ‘He wonderfully crosses keys with ease and it‘s wonderfully loose. To me he's almost like a Scottish musician.
