BAND PROFILE:

waxed all ' enthusiastic about . Good And Gone‘s

debut release, ‘Methil Box‘, a ‘gut-wrenching’ six-track EP, injecting some much-needed grit and bile into the generally tame and predictable Scottish indie scene.

But who are these masked men, swathed in black overcoats offstage and leaving stapled-together A6 pamphlets, with titles like ‘Crap Stories‘, around the place? Formed in January 1986 and originally from Glenrothes, Good And Gone moved down to Edinburgh, where they recorded one of the more compelling tracks on the local compilation “Wide Open' (Cracked Records) and most of ‘Methil Box’ with the line-up of Eddie Farrell (guitar/vocals), Pandy (bass/shouting) and Alastair Sneddon, replaced behind the drumkit by John Barrett. They're currently breaking in a new guitarist, John Johnson, for a series at gigs in February, but on Saturday 23 can be found at Négociants, Edinburgh, where they have played before, as a blues band, underthe name oi Black Crow King. Low-key blues gigs have been the most cost-effective way Good And Gone have been able to play, and they plan to

Last issue, regular readers will remember, we

l continue that way, for a while at least,

mainly outside Edinburgh.

They are dispensing with the Black Crow King name now that they feel the blues elements are integrating happily with the indie-rock Good And Gone style an approach they describe as distinctly ‘Fite-like’ (meaning more direct and upfront than namby-pamby Southerners). indeed, they claim that much of ‘Methil Box’ was inspired by the ‘non-event oi the place’.

Their latest recording is a version of Captain Beelheart's ‘Harry-lrene', destined fora Beetheart tribute LP on Imaginary Records as a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed compilation of Syd Barrett covers. It's a bit of a pedestrian version, but will appear alongside fellow contributors That Petrol Emotion, XTC and Sonic Youth, and hopefully get them a bit more anennon.

Good And Gone are already quite pleased at the wide cross-section at people who come along to see them, but are aware of shortcomings in the image department. To this end, they say, they are designing a stage set, a thought which immediately conjures up images of PiL‘s extravagant dayglo environmentorAlexanderD'Neal’s brass bed, but is more likely to take shape like their existing dark, brooding artwork. Haven't seen it? Get a copy of ‘Methil Box' then, it only lorthe tree poster.(Mab)
