Time was when cabaret, in Edinburgh certainly, pretty well stopped at the Fringe. Not so any more: Maria Callous, that's the cabaret performer, not the opera star, (see photo) appears in three venues in as many nights this week, twice on a double bill with the Panic Brothers - and two of the venues are newcomers to the cabaret scene.

Newcomers outside the Fringe, that is. The Gilded Balloon Studio Theatre in Edinburgh, which has become a favoured cabaret spot duringthe Fringe, has just re-opened to run a regular cabaret slot. In Glasgow, the Blue Note at the Briggait Centre has recently ventured into cabaret, holding performances, with considerable success, in the building's atmospheric internal courtyard. Callous also appears at Edinburgh'sTraverse, one of several other theatres who have enterprisineg been encouraging the growth of a cabaret circuit in Scotland, to support both indigenous and Incoming talent. Rumour has it that the Five Past Eleven Show at the Tron will also be making a comeback soon. . . See Cabaret Listings for details of shows.
