FOLK SCENE

Arlo Guthrie was once hugely popular in the times when ‘folk' was acoustic and lyrical. Woody’s son brings his own begotten son Abraham, playing keyboards in the soft pointed country rock backing band, to Edinburgh on the 29th. Nothing so smooth from the Pogues, who belt out their urban Irish stew on the same night. Hurry for the few remaining tickets. June Tabor, see photo, and Dick Gaughan are the two leading solo interpretors of British tolk song. Their performances radiate a confident authority and an unrivalled vocal technique, both bending the melody and phrase to uncanny and frequently mesmerising effect. Edinburgh audiences have a chance to hear Ms Tabor in an intimate setting on the 24th, and Gaughan plays two sets, for two causes, the 25th for the fight to keep Newbattle Abbey College, and on the 19th, the opening concert of the 2nd Edinburgh Peace Festival. The EPF has a good spread of music most nights, but the most dynamic and physically

irresistible sounds of the week will be the pan African music of Taxi Pata Pata on the 26th (Glasgow 25th). There are about nine basic members, augmented occasionally by top llight reed and brass players from the band's London base. The big sound is based on Congolese/Zairean soukous rhythms and those unique guitar riffs and runs that have infiltrated the public conciousness over the last few years; the musicians are from Kenya, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe, with a few Europeans, pulled together by Zairean percussionist singer, songwriter and trombonist Nsimba Foguis. ‘We play mainly soukous, but as we are from different places, we've got knowledge of different types of music. ltry to incorporate many kinds of styles, like jazz and a Caribbean feel’. With their colourful and frequent outbreaks of on-stage dancing, they are one of the most intoxicating, danceable bands you’re likelyto hear. (Norman Chalmers)
