MUSIC LIST/JAZZ

JAZZ ROUND-UP

BBC’s Big Band competition was won by Dick Lee's Chamber Jazz, and Platform are giving him Edinburgh’s Queen's Hall for the night or the 4th. The band will tke the lion’s share or the proceedings, but he will perform as a duo with pianist Graham Whitelaw and supply the reeds in the otherwise all string Swing '88. See Guestlist.

Lovers of the seemingly ageless Dixieland swing sounds will note that the legendary Dutch Swing College band, who have their roots in the Second World War Dutch Resistance, and are still led by founder member Peter Schillperoort, play Glasgow 12th and Edinburgh 11th.

Scottish tunes in one band, and a fiddle in the other? Ceilidh jazz? Well, it Garbarek can rework Scandinavian themes in his essays, John McLaughlin's Shakti merged with India, Dollar Brand and others brought Africa, and Latin rhythms have been part or serious jazz for decades, then why not a celtic jazz tusion? Ken Ryder‘s Talisker has been ploughing this lone furrow tor nearly twenty years, releasing albums and gigging all over Europe. But with the ever increasing interest in World Music, the new synthesis or styles, the band should expect a new audience and a tresh look at theirwork. Drummer Ryder writes and arranges most of the group’s material, and last year he and ‘iolk’ guitarist and singer Dick Gaughan released an album together, with some absorbing ideas, although ultimately a bit of a dud. On this trip the band will

feature Scots guitarist Don Paterson and young sax and flute player Pete McPhail, who also uses a wind driven synthesiser in the line up.

The violin will take centre stage in the Billy Bang Quartet when, with Talisker in support they play Glasgow 17th and Edinburgh 18th. Not in the well oiled Grappelli idiom, but in the attacking, percussive and rhythmically exciting way one would expect from proficient percussionist and drummer. Trained in the violin from an early age, his musical earwas moved by arch modernist anette Coleman's violin treatments, with whom he subsequently collaborated. From the New York jazz scene he brings Sirone on bass, Dennis Charles on drums and saxophonist Frank Lowe. The two groups will make it one of the most intriguing concert line-ups for some time.
