The play is not alonethough~unlike previousyears. when productions atCrawturd Theatre have looked slightlylonely. this yearthe venue will hostan array of accompanying eventS—the ‘Crawturdtest' to which Byattreters.

Betore everypertormance there will bea tree extra of music (from classicalto jazz). poetry or comedytor the audience (including an appearancetrom comedian Arnold Brown) andthereis also a exhibition of new Scottish painting. chosen by Sandy Moflatand representing. Byatt feels. the nextwave atterthe original ‘vigorous imagination' artists. The exhibitionis in tune withthe

play in more ways than one not only are the young artists Scottish. mostly Glaswegian. but theirstyle is trequently a development oisocialist-realism.
