The situation inthe play hadmanyparallelsin reality. Wilson discovered duringresearch. Many white soldiers were married to Indians. andwere caught in an intolerable position of divided loyalties. ‘The massacretookplace becausethe military descisions were made in the mid-West. so orders were sentoutthatwere

completely againstthe grain otwhatwasgoing on.’ explains Wilson. This does notabsolve his character. however. ‘He does enter intoitwillingly. because ol peergroup pressure. He wantsto appearthe same preciselybecause he's marriedtoanlndian. He's tornbetweentwo cultures.‘

Wilsonhopesthe play may go some waytowards redressingtheimbalanced viewputtorwardin Westerns. ‘Theplayis optimisticinavery strange way—andthatprogress embraces Christianity.’ explains Wilson. ‘He loses laith in God as he goes over his pastand he realisesthat Iinallywe've all gottogrow upandtace whatwe‘ve done.
