I Six Billion Monkeys: Swing To The Beat (Moogungwha). Supposedlythis lot are to be the next lNXS, and they seem to have everything a modern stadium-sized should, including a

whole string of digital delay pedals tor ; the guitar. There‘s a hint of the

manufactured, but that could be put down to overproduction, and afterwards it‘s like having eaten candy floss, but all in all a pleasant song.

I Hate Kapelle: Fire Escape (lntape). Edinburgh‘s Role Kapelle fit in the bag where they can‘t put anyone else. sounding at times like they'djust discovered the concept ot the pop song and thoughtthey‘d try itfora bit, before returning to their beloved prickly noise. The conflict has made for some good

tracks in the past, and I just know that Rote Kapelle have a monstrous classic in them. Unfortunately this isn't it.

I The Cateran: Bite Deeper (Sol-9). Bloody guitars, who needs them? They’ve been abused so alien in the name at ‘power‘, ‘excitement‘, ‘rock'n'roll' that when someone comes along with a twin-guitar attack like Edinburgh’s Cateran you‘ve got to sit up and take notice. As noted before,

; Husker Du in guitar sound and some harmonies, but think about the number of imitation Gillans about, check out

and heave a sigh of relief.

I The Dog Faced Hermans: Humans Fly (Calculus). The debut long-player from one of Edinburgh‘s tinest bands shows considerable progress trom the rather hesitant ‘Unbend’ EP. They know where they're headed now (for the most part) and go for it with a vengeance. The Spanish influence continues on an

E odd little number tor Marion's vocal

and a Spanish guitar, but the LP is worth buying for ‘El Doggo Speaks' alone: a rare example at flamenco-rock and already a highpoint of Hermans gigs. They would have fitted in nicely to the Rough Trade scene of the early

Eighties, and that‘s meant in the most

complimentary way.
