I Stalkert IS) (Andrei Tarkovsky. L'SSR. I979) Alexander Kaidanovsky. Anatoly Solonitsyn. Nikolai (irinko. Tarkovsky's allusive adaptation of the Strugatsky‘s novel about the aftermath of an alien visitation. The stalker is a man who is prepared to act as a guide through the contaminated area. but the director uses the Zone as a locale of very human desires and projections. Visually splendid and intellectually provocative. Stalker is one of Tarkovsky‘s most accessible films. Part of the Desperately Seeking Cinema season. Glasgow: (5 ET. I Stand By Me ( PG) I Rob Reiner. lis. I986) River Phoenix. Will Wheaton. Corey Feldman. Jerry ()'('onncrs. Keifer Sutherland. 88 mins. Based on a Stephen King short story. this film recallsa childhood adventure for four small-town boys who discover the whereabouts ofthe corpse of a missing boy. and decide toget there before the local toughs. It's a charming rite dc passage which Reincr directs with a sure touch. carefully ev ading sentimentality. Iidinburgh: I-'ilmhouse. I Stations (Bill .\'lc(iillivray. Canada. l983)88 mins. Described as a ‘kind of pan-Canadian response to Antonioni's 'I‘ltt’ I’rlsscngt'r'. .S'Iulimts follow s the self-realisation of a cy ncial reporter w ho conducts a series of interviews with his fellow passengers on a cross-Canada train. I The Sure Thing ( P( t ) ( Rob Reiner. t 's'. 1985 ) John ('tisack. Daphne Zuniga. Anthony Iidwards. 94 mins. Reiner's warm and very funny teen movie traces the tribulations of true love between the freewheeling ( iib and the studious Alison in the course of a journey across America to California. w here (iib has been promised the svelte ‘sure thing' of the title by his buddy Lance. At first antagonistic. the relationship grows. although not without its storms. while Reiner"s empathic treatment convincingly subverts the sexist imagery of the title andopcning sequence. Iidinburgh: Filmhousc. I Suspectt IS) a": (Peter Yates. LS. 1987). Cher. Dennis ()uaid. Liam NeesonJohn Mahoney. Inn mins. Sec Panel. (ilasgow: Cannon Sauchichall Street. Izdinburgh: Cannon I The Terminator ( I8) (James Cameron. L'S. I984) Arnold Schwarzenegger. Michael Bichn. Linda Ilamilton. Slickly paced. violent thriller about a killing machine sent back in time to murder the mother of a future liberator of the embattled planet earth. Arnie is perfect as the emotionless cyborg terminator. and Cameron handles the action with real flair and a slightly distrubing zest for carnage. also evident in his subsequent A Item. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Three Men and a Baby I I’( i ) ( Leonard Nimoy. L'S. I988) Tom Selleckfl‘ed Danson. Steve (iuttenberg. III3 mins. US CK. 1968) Keir Dullea. Gary Lockwood. Celebrated visionary epic about the history and future ofthe human race. superbly crafted and directed by Kubrick. It needs the big screen todo real justice to the famous sequences on the development of man and the landing on the distant site of the mysterious monolith. One of the great classics of modern cinema. Glasgow: GI’I‘. I Top Gun (PG) (Tony Scott. CS. 1986) Tom Cruise. Kelly McCiillis. Val Kilmer.

I III mins. Say what you like about him. Tony Scott undoubtedly has the golden touch at the box office. This emotionless formula adventure about men being grandly upstaged by very fast. very expensive and very dangerous aircraft. with the splendid Kelly McGillis thrown in as love interest for Cruise. made a fortune. especially in the US. It had to bethose planes. or maybe the rampant 'America the strong' ethos of the film. because it doesn't have much more to offer in its displaced western plot about rivalry between pilots for the coveted title oftop gun. (ilasgow: Cannon Clarkston Road. I The Unbearable Lightness of Being ( 18) (Philip Kaufman. US. 1987) Daniel Day-Lewis. Juliette Binoche. Lena Olin. 167 mins. Ambitious adaptation ofMilan Kundcra‘s elliptical. complex novel about a womanising Czech brain surgeon who falls in love for the first time with a doe-like beauty from a small spa town. Abandoning his freewheeling former existence. he faces commitment and togetherness at the time ofthe Prague Spring and Russian invasion of 1968.

A dawdling and rather austere narrative is given some spice and interest by an overwhelming eroticism. a beautifully judged evocation of Prague and gorgeous photography. otherwise vastly overlong and uninvolving. Edinburgh: Cameo I Wall Street ( I5) (Oliver Stone. L'S. I987) Charlie Sheen. Michael Douglas. Daryl Hannah. Terence Stamp. 129mins. Returning to the trenches. unabashed moralist Stone again presents a flawed hero w ith character-defining dilemmas and invites us to observe as he isexcited. seduced.overwhelmed. abandoncdand ultimately redeemed by the wrongturns and twists of his encounters with malfeasance. Contemporary robber baron and stockmarket legend (iordon Gecko (Douglas) takes a shine toambitious yuppie Bud Fox (Sheen) and eventually offers him the choice of becominga ruthless player like himself. or maintaining his self-respect and integrity.

Wall Street finds Stone's fire tempered by a more seductively ambivalent incarnation ofevil. but the result is stillan impressive. engrossing drama that. for memorable dialogue and fluid cinematic skill remains comfortably ahead ofthe current pack. (ilasgow: ()deon. Cannon Clarkston Road. Edinburgh: ()deon. Strathcly'de: Cannon Kilmarnock. Kclburnc. ()deon Ayr. Rialto.

I The While Shiek ( PG) (Federico Fellini. Italy". 1952) Alberto Sordi. Leopoldo Trieste. Brunella Bove. (iuillctta Masina. ll3 mins. Typically sly early satire from Fellini. A young couple arrive in Rome. where the husband is to be presented to the Pope. but the wife has a mission ofher own »- to meet The White Shiek . the handsome hero of a photographed comic strip. played by Sordi. Part of the Italian comedy season. Iidinburgh: Filmhousc. I Withnail & I ( I5) (Bruce Robinson. UK. 1986) Richard Ii. (irant. Paul McGann. Richard Griffiths. It)? mins. Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical look back at the demise of the I96IIs. Withnail (Grant) and I (McGann) are two out of work actors living in disgusting squalor in Camden Town in the final months of 1969. When ‘I‘ gets an audition. he decidesthat what they need is a trip to the country to regenerate. Withnail persuades his repulsive L'ncle Monty (brilliantly played by (iriffiths) to lend them hiscountry cottage. but the pair are definately notcut out for rural life. Their predicament worsens when Monty appears on the scene. having taken quite a shine to his nephew‘s attractive young friend.

The film alternates between slapstick comedy and a bitter-sweet poignancy in its dissection of the crumbling of both a friendship and a lost dream. Edinburgh: Filmhouse
