MAXI PRIEST

Home-grown reggae star Maxi Priest kicks all his new British tour at the Playhouse, Edinburgh, on Sun 19, on the back on his successrul new single, ‘Wild World', a cover of the old Cat Stevens song. The singer’s last single was a cover as well: a version of ‘Some Guys Have All The Luck’, which put the ' Robert Palmer version firmly in the shade, and got Maxi linally noticed by the radio.

The greatest accolade, however, must have been when the 25 year-old from south London headlined one night or the Jamaican Reggae Sunsplash iestival, after only his second album, to be joined onstage by Gregory lsaacs, Bunny Wailer and Ziggy Marley. Sunsplash was his lirst visit to the land or his ancestors, but he stayed to record his third album, ‘Maxi’, Irom which both the aforementioned singles are taken, with the legendary Sly and Robbie, producers or more records than anyone has been able to count. Recording in Jamaica, laying down live tracks in one day. inspired the young starto comment, ‘I lelt I was an extended limb, a part olJamaica that had grown in England’.

Indeed, his debut single, ‘Hey Little Girl’, became the tirst British reggae record to make it to Number One in Jamaica, but he had to wait until 1986 before he was declared Best Male Vocalist in the UK Reggae Awards, alter eight years of activity on the

British reggae scene.

The current tour lollows Maxi's appearance at the benelit celebrating Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday at Wembley, alongside Simple Minds, Dire Straits and Eurythmics and reuniting him with Sly and Robbie once more. Maxi Priest has arrived. And in a big way. (Mab)
