My Girlfriend‘s Boyfriend is the sixth and final offering in veteran director Eric Rohmer's series of Comedies And Proverbs and is a characteristically crisp and dextrous depiction of longing, fulfilment. fidelity and betrayal.
Set in a thriving new town on the outskirts of Paris, the focus is on a developing friendship between two young women. Computer programmer Léa (Sophie Renoir) is the more romantically experienced of the two, whilst shy civil servant and newcomer Blanche (Emmanuelle Chaulet) defensively claims that there is more to life than pursuing a relationship. Then, she grudgingly admits her attraction to popular local engineerAlexandre (Francois-Eric Gendron). Lea warns her of his reputation but encourages herto follow her heart. However, when
Léa departs on holiday, Blanche discovers that she shares a mutual passion for windsurfing with her boyfriend Fabien (Eric Viellard) and an uneasy mutual attraction follows. A lightness of touch, apparent spontaneity of performance and naturalness of observation create a deceptively simple whole that deftly investigates a complex range of emotional situations that are all too achinglylamiliarto the romantic young-in-heart.
