Though the idea at a second large AIDS Party in London had to be pulled through lack ot support Irom big name artists, the cause has not been torgotten by everyone, and a tollow-up to last year's benetit in the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms is welcome news.

The benelit, taking place on Thursday 21 brings together a lashion show, cabaret, street entertainment and a selection ol the better Edinburgh bands, and is the lirst promotional venture oI Gauntlet Promotions, run by Philip Woyka and Ian McCallum.

‘AIDS is pretty passe this year,‘ declares Woyka. ‘Nelson Mandela is this year‘s cause. It's important that people are reminded ot AIDS in a strong but positive way.’

He is loath to call this year‘s benetit a Iollow-up. ‘We want it to be an

EDINBURGHAIDS BENEFIT

Edinburgh showcase. It's intended to show Edinburgh what it‘s got itselI. It's not often we celebrate what we’ve got here. The talent usually leaves and goes elsewhere.‘

The idea torthe 1988 benetit started as a lashion show and just snowballed Irom there. The Edinburgh Design Collection—a group ot independent lashion designers—will be showing theirwares, and the variety ol entertainments includes the great Arnold Brown (why not?), Maria Callous, Ian Morton, May Moneady, and a host at jugglers and acrobats. Music is provided by Goodbye Mr Mackenzie (pictured), The Indian Givers, Bop Sh'Bam, Paparazzi and That Swing Thang. There will also be 500 suppertickets available.

Woyka reports a lot at positive response Irom everyone he’s contacted, and will tell you he's ‘thrilled' at the prospect.

‘Last year the money that was made got swallowed up in the International Iund. This yearthe money is going directly to help People With AIDS in Edinburgh. It's not going towards administration or research —that should be the government‘s job but to a group called Frontliners, who are already well on the go in London and will be launched up here on the night at the benelit.‘ Frontliners are People With AIDS helping People With AIDS, looking after their needs through their illness. It, as seems inevitable, AIDS isn‘t going away tor a long, long time, Frontliners will be indispensible. (Mao)
