NIGHTLIFE LIST

BENNETS SHIMMY CLUB

Here‘s a teaserloryou. What‘s the longest running club night in Glasgow? Well, it‘s been going tor live years now (a liletime in Glasgow terms) and it‘s guaranteed to be sold out every week. No. it‘s not Eden. it‘s the Shimmy Club (orthe Tuesday Night Alternative) at Bennets.

Originally it was a punk club, but as the crowd has changed over the years so has the music. Current lavourites are rare groove 603' soul. TOs‘ dance and tunk. R&B. acid house. and they still lind time to lit some mild punk in.

It‘s run by Bobby Gibson and Craig Davis (who also does Fudrukkers at Cleopatras on Sundays) and they leel that the club has remained so popular because the music is unpredictable and because 01 the lreedom you are given to enjoy yoursell (ie the bouncers take a backseat). Personally, I think it‘s got something to do with the unusually friendly atmosphere, with such a diverse crowd (punks. lashion victims, Bennets‘ regulargay clientele, etc). It certainly isn‘tthe ‘Saturday Night Fever‘ decor! (Colin Steven)
