NEW GENERATION NINETEEN YEARS ON

Compass Gallery. Glasgow

For nineteen years. Cyril Gerber. ownerot the Compass Gallery, has been mounting a New Generation Show. Every yeararound this time. his selection at students‘ work lrom the tour Scottish art colleges lills the basement Compass to capacity.

In the early Eighties artists like Steven Campbell and Adrian Wizniewski moved lrom art school studio to immediate success on the art world circuit. Spotlights on the latest stars were lirst lit at exhibitions like New Generation which were popping up throughout Scottish galleries.

Throughout it all and now as the lever lor stardom settles into some kind at post-hype perspective, Gerber's show remains a constant. He simply otters the New Generation, without medals or prizes, a group launch trom school to the world at dealers and critics and public opinion. They are chosen because they show young promise at one kind or another, not because they have itall sewn up.

This year, that is particularly true at the group selected. There is an overall saleness about the work which seems to leave little room tor individuals to shine. There is an atmosphere of education at the price at spontaneity coupled with a tear ol experimentation. But perhaps too much is expected at students and it you take time to sitt through the exhibition there are glimmers of that promise which might make it past the high-pressure obstacles which this ‘enterprise

society‘ deals out with degrees. Maree Meahan‘s sheep hung with barbed wire is a deltly drawn statement while Angela Reid paints a glossy magpie with the size and strength at an eagle. Though most are involved in tigurative studies, Olivia Lloyd hones down her interest to lorm and line. It is her ditterence trom the rest, ratherthan the work itselt, which is striking. Simon Alexander is another artist who has broken tree at an art college stamp early on. His sophisticated ‘naive‘

Julia McNairn

prints and paintings illustrate sharply observed Alrican scenes. The ‘View at Kampala' with its shadowy black cars and sleeping god, has texture in both colourand tale.

Julia McNairn‘s little charcoal study ot an industrial scape has a European touch and a tightness not as clear in her larger painting. In an unusual golden collage, Janice Gray also looks at a city, introducing humanity as a giant tied up against a chimney. (Alice Bain)
