REVIEW '

Festival ForA Nuclear Free Scotland, Meadowbank Stadium; Edinburgh.

In a reversal oi traditionalprocedures, the biggest-drawing acts were at the start oi the proceedings, due to gigging commitments abroad later In the day. Roddy Frame, ea'ns guitar at first, kicked things all by leading Aztec Camera in a stick but loveable run through the great songs oi his short career. The last time I saw the band in ' tull swing, Frame had just discovered his liking lor tortuous lull-distortion lead guitar solos. The soullui, Americanised edge that his new band bring to the old songs (even showing a gospeily Iiavour at times) Is a trash reminder oi why we went ga-ga over them in the iirst place.

The mld-attemoon bands, though well-received had the awiul air or tillers. Nothing The Mighty Lemon Drops playedshook my long-held ' beliei that they learnt everything they know Irom Echo and The Bunnymen.

The Soup Dragons are queerer fish. and don't look the healthiest or chaps either. Meadowbank seemed to catch them in the act or leaving the wimpy

indie scene lor grebo-dom. Facial hair

sprouts, Les Paul guitars hook up to Marshall stacks (I was even reminded oi the Sex Pistols by a lew grungey

guitar intros) and they have ‘technlcai

problems on the stage’. The Bhundu Boys were apparently

hunger pangs got too bad, and : underhand methods were resorted to to get a bite to eat without queuing tor a lull hour ioran over-priced hamburger. 5

The day's personal highlight turned out most unexpectedly to be Deacon Blue. j . Thelrassured'showmanship and i mastery oi the situation came to a peak

beyond its LP length and explicitly

introduced it by noting, with a pun on the title, the relationship between 1 money and weapons). ' ‘That wasn’t a typical pertormance.‘ understated a modest Ricky Ross backstage. One could only wish that

attributed to Aswad (rescheduled to

Camera) who might have stuck around lora lull set alter their name had been splashed at the very topot the posters and adverts tor weeks. With the

late, the band decided they only had the time to play one song (their Number One hit ‘Don’t Turn Around') belore rushing oil to catch a plane to a gig in Finland, a belly sum in their back pockets. With the early departures oi the top two headlining bands. the task at rounding the day all was left to relative . newcomers Voice OlThe Beehive, who canted it all with apiomb. though to an audience which had seriously diminished alter a large number oi the Deacon Blue tans had made their way 1 home. A good linish to a mixed. and 1 frankly mixed-up day. (Mab)
