THE BIG DISH

When The Big Dish’s debut LP, ‘The ' Swimmer’, came out it was hailed everywhere as a classic album, one of the best to come out at Glasgow tor years, and certainly the best thing to come out at Airdrie ever. Sadly, the enthusiasm of the press and their core of fans nevertranslated into the kind of sales that the band deserved. Their record company, Virgin, was scratching its collective head, particularly over the failure of the great ‘Slide’ single to make the Top Forty.

The band’s new 45, ‘European Hain', is howevertheir biggest-selling single yet, and the Dish’s lrontman and songwriter Stephen Lindsay (who along with Brian mm and Raymond Docherty makes up the nucleus of the band) admits that the reason it sounds so much more like single material is because Virgin suggested he go away and write one to complete the LP, but he is adamant that this doesn't detract lrom the quality of the track. Writing to order like that, he says, ‘is quite a challenge. But the song itself isn’t that far removed lrom the sort of thing I write anyway’.

‘Creeping Up On Jesus‘ is the title of the LP that really should break The Big Dish into the BigTime, and it’s intended to remedy the slightly antiseptic sound at ‘The Swimmer’.

It was mainly produced by Bruce Lampcov, who had not long since finished work on Simple Minds’ live LP. It’s a reliel to hear that he hasn’t

swamped the Dish sound with bombast. ‘He was good at getting perlormances out of us,’ says guitarist Brian. ‘He hadn’t any particular idea about changing arrangements. He really pushed us to the limits. Demanding, precocious, but good.’

Only now are they thinking of producing themselves. The track that they turned their hands to is ‘Burn’, and it sounds just tine, especially doused in country-style slide guitar. It also happens to be the band’s lavourite ol the current set. They’re grateful for what they learnt from Lampcov in terms of arrangement and dynamics. ‘And we‘re working much more as a live band now,’ Brian continues, ‘so spontaneous things will be able to happen}

People will be able to judge for themselves at Edinburgh’s Venue on Saturday 20, when the Dish play a rare one-oil set. (Mab)

I King Biscuit Time ()ddfellows. Forrest Road. 220 1816. Free. Gritty blues from Good and Gone under a new name surely not trying to live down their appearance on the disappointing ‘Fast & Bulbous‘ Beefheart tribute LP?
