Pub Guide

The Scottish licensing laws. as everyone must know by now. are decidedly liberal in comparison to the out-moded restrictions imposed elsewhere in Britain. During the Festival an even more flexible state of affairs prevails in Edinburgh as many pubs are granted special extensions. lt's fairto say that most city centre pubs will have sortie sort of late licence for this period. A point of advice: Edinburgh is not a particularly violent place but like elsewhere in Britain late at night. pubsare potentially dangerous places. Bear thisin mind particularly if you're visiting I.othian Road or Rose Street in the small hours. although Rose Street. with its enterprising Street Festival sponsored by a brewery. is working hard to create a family atmosphere. Beers in Scotland are known as 'light'. ‘heavy' and ‘export' light -- (increasingly rare 1 being the weakest. export the strongest. Real ale. that is cask-conditioned. carefully prepared beer. has increased dramatically in popularity and is usually labelled 611 -. 711 - or 811 - in ascending order ofstrength.
