Spanish artist Julian Casado has spent his lite wrestling with his spirit. Having trained at the State College tor Painting
and Cratts in Madrid. he worked in industrial design before becoming a priest tor several years. He then
returned to painting and was absolved
ot priestly responsibilities.
Casado expresses his search tor spirituality with a highly disciplined technique involving ‘parallel lines at
caretully modulated colour‘ to produce
abstract works with a sense at depth and light. References to di Chirico in the titles at certain works serve to enlorce the suggestion ol surrealism apparant in his use of perspective. a spectral shadow-casting circle, and openings like doors or windows in a stylised structure.
What is most interesting about this work is the connection between the
artist‘s previous discipline as a priest
and his tinally chosen mantle as a painter. (John Maclaren)
