Thomas Joshua Cooper. Graeme Murray Gallery. See Photography sechon. The gallery itsell is calm and sophisticated. It might seem at a glancethatthe work itshows isthe same. Not so. On one wall there is a steaming rockpool of water at the Children's Falls. so named alter two children tell with a collapsing bridge. Opposite. a dark black scene oi rock throws up a bright light at ice in the background and the message at a white leather in lront. Going up the stairs a rock slope has been tipped into a kingdom ot clouds. Using the power at reality. these photographs by the Glasgow-adopted American Thomas Joshua Cooper take you to the heart at glacier. mountain and lalls.

The quality at his prints. as ever. is monumental. Close up every detail is

exposed. so much so that it sometimes seems that the landscape has bottomless depths ot perspective. With inspection the flat surface of the photograph gives the almost trompe I‘oeil ettect oi wanting to push your hand right through them. But trom a distance the views are no less impressive. The Gulltloss lalls in Iceland churn against the black contrast at wet rocks and a gaping hole opens under the crust ot a glacial sheet

In this exhibition Cooper has visited northern places which exist on the map. but his locus does not rest with their geography alone. He moves in on the spirit of the tour elements which named gods in ancient civilisations and are too much ignored in our own. (Alice Bain) The photograph above is one at three entitled The Giant‘s Causeway. Stalta. County Antrim. Scotland. Ireland.
