ACIEEEEED

The biggest hype since the Beastie Boys brought rap to the fore last year is in full swing in Glasgow‘s clubs at the moment. It‘s called acid house and it's a variation of the house movement so popular a couple of years back. As before, the music is being generated by the wizard Chicago DJs but now Detroit is also moving in on the scene with the fresh sound of Techo. Although all the music is instantly recognisable with its thumping, monotonous beat, layered with spacey electro sounds (how about that fora definition!)

The whole club scene originated in London (oi course) earlier this year and it is only just now that the whole thing had taken off in Glasgow. A month ago there were no Acid clubs at all, only a select few playing a couple of token tracks. Now just about every ‘trendy’ club wants to be associated with it and there are even two exclusive acid nights-Colin Barr‘s ‘Zoom‘ club at Fury Murrys and the West End Posse’s new club ‘Ecstasy’ at the Sub Club.

Both these clubs run on Friday night so expect fierce rivalry.

Acid house appears to be so popular because of its strange culture and the audience participation the dancers are the stars. The style of dancing has to be seen to be believed; arms are outstretched and waved around the body as if in a hypnotic trance. Every now and then weird chants break out, the favourites being ‘Acieeeed’ and ‘Can you feel it?‘. Even the style of dress is strange. Loose baggy shirts and T-shirts with crazy designs are in, as are bandanas, flares, sunglasses and smiley accessories- especially badges.

All in all it's great dance music, but being the cynic that I am, Ican’t see it lasting more than a couple of months. So go along and check it out, even if iust to amuse yourself at the fashion victims dancing! (Colin Steven) Other recommended clubs: Trax at Rooftops (Saturdays), Casa at Henry Alrikas (Saturdays), Slam at Tin Pan Alley (Saturdays), Blackmarket at Fury Murrys (Thursdays) and Fresh at the Cotton Club (Sundays).
