oflet's be funky or let's be moody. it was just what this song wants to be it shall be.

"l'he kind of heayy music and funk backdrop that was used on the first album presented to me a chance for general social commentary about things. It just gaye me a lot of chances to make major digs. It wasn’t like "this song is about fascism” but it contained a lot ol references.

(irant admits to hay ingonly eyct‘ written one happy song. a beautiful ballad called Rosemarie. which does not appear on either album. ( )n the contradictions of being in the music business with his political and moral beliefs. he has also thought out his position: '.-\ lot ol the last album was about them . . . the kings and the money tnen. whereas now these references are a bit more obtuse. .-\ lot of the songs on the last album came from a feeling of guilt lrom what I did. (‘oming to terms with the ideas of trying to be a socialist working in this industry. It iust seemed like a contradiction.

‘ln that respect this album is more traditional. It really iust coyers the kaleidoscope of emotions iiiyoly ed in the mental destabilisation of being in loye. I think most people liye their liyes in quiet desperation.~

‘()fthe new songs. .'\yalanche is not just about the record company.

it's about haying no money. no girlfriend. no job. nothing to look forward to in life . . . whereason the last album songs like Cheeseburger and 'l'emptation 'l'ime were about the idea of me ending tip smacked out of my brains in a hotel room in [as Vegas with a price tag on me. haying tray elled through the metropolis rock and roll hell of New York and l.os Angeles to get there. “l‘he fact that the last album did not take off made some of the songs a joke.‘ .lames continued. ‘(andybar w as basically saying be a sucker for success. so the w hole song makes me look like a dick becattsc it was a flop. loye and Money was the same. it

w as saying this is success. this is what if can do for you.‘

'l‘he two albums haye seen Loye and Money traycl. to quote l'p liscalator. one of the songs on the new album ‘from (‘hateau I.ait to Sunset Bouley ard.‘ 'I‘he \ ideo for llalleluiah Man was made in Japan. the one for (‘andybar Express in the Moiaye l)escrt. Both albums liaye been recorded mainly in America. so how could the transition from (ilasgow to New York be made'.’

‘liyery city is a contradiction. there‘s no question of that. (ilasgow at the moment is an absurd

An Heiress. A Hustler. A Set- up. ..

A Murder.

contradiction. all this money i ouring into the inner city. and eyeryone wanting to liye here and buy an expei.siyc flat. It means more and more nicer people stroke yuppies are coming into the city . while you‘ye still got people liying in poy erty and being left by the wayside in the schemes.

‘You can w rite about that in (ilasgow‘. but when you go to New York it is just like a psychotic Disneyland. It is like a massiye big cinema screen. liyery time you walk down Madison Ayenue. you see a woman in a fur coat walking a poodle with a cashmere sweater on past a guy in the gutter w hose w caring a sandwich board that says “I have AIDS —— help me". It is disturbing.

‘And there‘s 42nd Street. where we were recording eye ry day. We had to go past all the porno emporiums eyery day. and it was really. really depressing. And there is a shop on the corner that sells Raybans. cowboy boots and bulletproof yests. I just could not understand that. Is there any other reason for buying a bulletproof yest than if you are going to indulge in combat."

The contradictions surrounding Love and Money may extend into the liye format. and the shows which follow at Edinburgh \‘enue (41h. 5th) and (ilasgow School of Art (7th. 8th) act primarily as a showcase for the new album. Love and Money are certainly an exciting liye band. and it w ill be interesting to see how the newer. more laid back songs fit the dynamics of their set. It is certainly worth seeing. and the decision to i buy not buy the album should follow

The way some pe0ple love is a crime.
