HAPPY MONDAYS
As tar as being pop stars goes, Happy Mondays (Glasgow Rooftops on Sunday 11 and Edinburgh Venue on Monday 12) are square pegs in a round hole. Any band who entitle their lirst long player ‘Squirrel & G-Man 24 Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out)‘ and sabotage their poppiest tracks with titles like ‘Brain Dead Fucker' aren't in ittorthe chance to drink cocktails with Bruno Brookes at Radio One parties. This alone means they must have something going lor them.
And they do. too. Their second album. going underthe much more concise title ‘Bummed'. shows an alarmingly good band with the same attitude towards music as they have towards their interviews. i.e. say what the hell you like and worry about the consequences later.
Recorded with lormerJoy Division producer Martin Hannett at the controls. ‘Bummed‘ was released in Novemberto tumultuous acclaim. Hannett. no strangerlo ‘dilticult' groups has homed in on what makes the Happy Mondays sound and strengthened it to the extent that the disparate elements bobbing around an undeniably lunky centre make immaculate sense. He‘s done it without sacriticing their essential appeal. Dead on the heat. but always threatening to swerve oil into entirely unexpected pastures: that's Happy Mondays.

along like some mad mutant country and western record. followed by ‘Moving to With Mad Cyril' which is

i the Acid House scene is bending over i backwards to dismiss the drug involvement in that scene as exaggerated. Happy Mondays are out~oi-step enough to be less than coy about their track record in that department. and the ellects they‘ve wreaked on their collective psyche. One of these days their big mouths. and their relusal to take themselves seriously. might be the linish olthem (and it's debatable that the shaved pudenda on the inner sleeve were put there with the intention at making a heavy artistic statement). but. nails in teeth. Happy Mondays are gleelully hammering down the collin lid on Factory Records' supposed doom and gloom image. (Mab)
