; COMPULSION

War at the Venue, Calton Road, Edinburgh.

War on a neuromuscular level ie ettect on both nerves and muscles. A visual, aural, physical interaction at Venue and crowd. War on the staid club/gig format. the easy, accepted tormula.

Those who sampled the atmosphere on Saturday the 10th realise the verve behind the club; as managerot the Venue Ewan and protessional sound engineer Rock say, they achieved everything they wanted to - lor the first nightat least—but due to teething problems, not to the the extent they

wished.

The records and tapes are heavy and very danceable, Eurobeat and On-U sounds leature amongst a scope ot

modern music. The visual slides, video and lilm are punchy and relevant adding an amoral libre to the gig.

The strategy at War seems to be it will only run it there is something worthwhile to put on, therelore avoiding complacency trom regulars and the club itsell. ln combating the uninspired gig/club setup, Warwill use sequenced events to provide a constant motion to the evening.

Take Hogmanay when the Venue will

be open trorn 10 till very late on two . floors The Fini Tribe will be playing

has the change ol music. w ith rap. acid iau. deep house and lunk play mg instead ol ltlsl acid.

but the stage will be a seated area and with the band using remotes they appear, emerging trom the music on dance lloor level. This will hopetully

avoid the attitude at ‘l’m here to see a gig, everything else is secondary'. Downstairs will have seating lor over

100 providing respite lrom the multi media experience upstairs. It sounds like something else, so inspiring that War has persauded the Tackhead sound system to travel up on New Year‘s Eve lorsome powerful input as well. There‘s a limit on the tickets available at Virgin and Ripping Records, so think ahead. (Stuart Raiker)
