But the public demand is generally for the older styles. Edinburgh's Trad, Dixie and New Orleans tans lament the demise of Basin Street as a live venue. The Haymarltet bar has lor years now presented live music most nights of the week. Whateverthe rumours, management assert that Fridays and Saturdays are to carry on for sometime with the Spirits Oi Rhythm and Dr MacJazz.

But there is plenty ol the music still around town, in regular pub sessions, see listings. One of the best known band leaders, and organiser of the huge summer Jazz Festival, is Milte Hart, and his Society Syncopators with

Glasgow's Wendy Weatherby on vocals, are resident every Sunday night in Princes Street’s Royal British Hotel. Admission is lree but occasional ‘name' visiting guest musicians will see an entrance fee charged.

Glasgow’s loyal classic jazz followers have one of their favourite annual events when singer Carol Kidd, see Music Page, headlines the Society 01 Musicians’ Valentine's Day Concert in the Mitchell Theatre on the 7th. The Bill Fanning Orchestra and George Penman’s Jazz Band also do the honours.

Over in Langside, the Boswell Hotel is a new Tuesday night venue with the likes of original revivalists, George

7 Ogilvie’s Band in a popular

participatory Trad and Dixie bash.

The Blues is a variable iorm. In Edinburgh two all-day benefits are going to interpret this now universal music in distinctive ways. Edinburgh University's Dance Band, with an augmented brass section are going to keep playing blues from noon till 8pm, at the Reid Concert Hall. They have been individually sponsored, but won't refuse any donations. Musicians, embryonic or virtuoso are welcome to join in the various iun combinations.

Up the West Port from the Grassmarltet, the Lord Darnley is a lavourite Saturday afternoon haunt ol guitar bands playing early rock and roll and rhythm and blues.
