I KinglishersCatch Fire bring their
unconventional but lovable rock sound to Moray House Students Union on Friday 27.
Despite having been around in some incarnation tor a while, the current line up of Tracy Sparkes (vocals), Alan Wishart (guitar), Colin Cummings (bass) and Clive Parker (drums), have a line four-song demo which has recently been reopening some previously closed ears in record company offices, which is hardly ' surprising. ‘No Peace in Heaven’ is part at an increasingly rare breed of unrestrained rock and roll — Led Zepplin meeting Janis Joplin at a dark street corner in the 19803. The current sound is something of a conscious reaction to their collective pasts, as Tracy explained: ‘The band really started after I met Clive at a session. We were both in a similar position — really tired of the bands we were in; pissed on playing lormularized music and pandering to what we thought at the time was commercial.‘
The reaction was Tracy and Clive writing songs round drum rhythms, the outcome being a single in 1986, which was ‘less involved and more sparse‘ than what the band do now. The rave reviews received in the press prompted
asearch fora guitarist, which was l when Alan became a member. The next i
stage in their development was also less than satislactory: ‘We played gigs on and all throughout 1986 and 87‘, said Tracy, ‘but it was a very sell conscious altair — we were very anxious to get somewhere last. And when that happens you lose sight of the music, because you are so busy worrying about who is going to be coming to the gig, and that sort ol thing. It took us a long time to throw that on and realise that you should just get on with what you believe in. That way people can take it or leave it.’
Kinglishers Catch Fire at the start of 1989 are described by Tracy as ‘kind at edgy and involved musically—the kind at thing it is impossible to be indifferent about'. While this may have been a hindrance in their earlierlorms, it may be that the most recent work, both in the studio and live, has helped lheircause greatly.
‘There seems to be a bit of record company interest now’, Tracy explained, ‘which is a bit ironic, because when we actively sought record companies they were indifferent. Now that we are not desperately seeking them out, they seem to be coming to us. Even so, that side of things doesn’t interest us too much — so long as we still enjoy it we‘ll keep going. It would be greatthough if people could get the chance to hear us and give us credit for what we do, and that can only be done through a major.‘
One final point ol reassurance— Kinglishers Catch Fire are nothing like The Primitives or anything at that ilk.
‘I suppose the Sun reader response to a band with a lemale singer is to think ‘boobs and blondes' or whatever, but as tar as I can see we are all human beings with arms and legs. It is good that woman singers are in vogue at the moment— but most of them aren't any good. I like people who can sing like Mica Paris, although that is not really my kind of music. I think Bjork ol the Sugarcubes is great: as well as being technically brilliant she is very innovative . . . but I hate that Einar guy. . . (John Williamson)
