BELOW THE MASON-DIXON LINE

The American parallel to Scotland’s tartan singers and grinning accordion duos is the Nashville country star, spangled purveyor of empty-headed formula song. And eclipsed by that wealthy music industry the real songwriters of what is an American folk tradition have until now gained little attention in the wider world. outwith the growing awareness of what is termed ‘New Country’ artists like Nanci Griffiths, Dwight Yoakum, Lyle Lovatt and even Michelle Shocked, there is a realisation that intelligent music is produced below the Mason-Dixon line.

Arriving in Edinburgh on the 3rd, Guy Clark is one of the most respected of the Southern songwriters, and his praises and songs have been sung, both by the new wave and innumerable star performers from Johnny Cash to the Everly Brothers. The tour promotes his new album, ‘Through Throwing Good Love After Dad’, released on u2’s Mother Records.

Glasgow Arts Centre holds a concert oi Pictish music on the 24th. No relation to the shadowy nation of ancient Caledonia, Marianna Lines’ tracery or Robbie’s Free State, but the group brought together for Rod Paterson’s last album. With Rod on vocals, and featuring many of his own songs, the band comprises another Easy Clubber, Jack Evans on guitar, and the reedy resonances of Hamish Moore’s pipes and Dick Lee's clarinet and saxes. Rod also solos at Young’s

Guy Clark who plays St Brides, Edinburgh. on the 3rd.

Music Club in Edinburgh on the 26th. Northumbrian music, with its distinctive hornpipes and clusters of clean, ‘popped’ notes has a high profile in the folk world as Kathryn Tickell does the rounds of festivals and clubs. She was encouraged, as were all the line crop of younger Tyneside players, by the tireless proselytiser of traditional music, Alistair Anderson. A virtuoso concertina player, he took up the little instrument while at school with the Boys Of The Lough’s Dave Richardson, and gives an account of an amazing variety of tunes, from Bach pieces through ragtime to his own suites written in traditional forms. Also a line performer on the little keyed chanter of the bellows blown Northumbrian Smaltpipes, Alistair makes one of his regular visits to Edinburgh Folk Club on

the tst.
