NORWEGIAN JAZZ

Jon Christensen and Arild Anderson are two oi Europe’s great jazz musicians, on drums and bass respectively. From Norway and the same musical generation that produced Jan Garbarek, with whom they have otten recorded, their musical careers stretch through albums and sessions with players the calibre of Keith Jarrett, Gary Burton, Miroslav Vitous, Bill Frisell, Chick Corea and Alphonse Mouzon. The ECM label, which has defined a European stream of jazz, rellective, introspective, composed and incantational, has released the last two albums oi Masquelero, the group put together by the rhythm section pair, and the band, with a young sax and trumpet front line of Tore Brumborg and Nils Petter Molvaer, arrives in Glasgow lor one concert on the 24th, as part of the City’s Norwegian Week. Dense textures and cyclical figures are the ground for the soloists, but the group’s great appeal is very much its ensemble sound. Saxophonist Andy Sheppard has just released his second album, and, as anyone who was at his last concert here will tell you, plays with a refreshing energy, and an innovative, convoluted melodic sense in one of the tightest groups in Britain. The years working together have given them a refined awareness of the leader's shins and
