At Edinburgh's recent Folk Festival the participants and spectators at the concertlna workshop were taken aback by local lad Simon Thoumire, who has developed a wild technique on the little squeeze box, mixing blues with the barn dances. He plays the Glasgow Star Club on the 20th in Seannachie, a group that has kept a high standard of Scottish music through the years and the line-up changes.

Over beyond the Pentland Hills, two harps beat as one in Sileas. Mary Macmaster and Patsy Seddon are the up-to-the-minute clarsach duo, sometimes with an electro-liarp, who sing and play on the 11th.

Edinburgh has the regular and popular Latin American based evening of classical, contemporary and lolk music with Carlos Arredondo and iriends, on the 7th, when guests include a cappella singers Witches Tuesday, and viola playerAngela Tickle.

The Calton Studios is the venue, on the 14th, ior Alan Johnstone’s promotion, wetting the head 01 his new album, North Of The Border, in company with a number at musician friends and local bands, in whatwlll be as much a party as a concert— see Listings.

One of the few successiul prolesslonal lolk musicians to have lasted the pace since the beginning at the 70s, Pete Coe (see photo), is a major representative at the English lolk revival. A multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, dance teacher and lecturer in the history at songs and traditional lore, he has released numerous albums, solo or in groups

such as Red Shift or in his latest A Right Song And Dance, with English smallpipes player Dave Shaw, a cellist, a choir and a dance band. His songs have been recorded by discriminating singers like Leon Rosselson and June Tabor, and even those ever more commercially orientated Chieftains. One of the most accomplished club performers, his variety of talents might include a set of English dance tunes on the melodeon, followed by a 19th century street song, then a banjo air, all delivered with an iniormed wry humour. He plays the Edinburgh Folk Club solo on the 19th and the Glasgow Arts Centre on the 21st, sharing the bill with Canada‘s hottest new-wave Rocky Mountain Celts, Spirit 01 The West.
