FOLK

IRISH FOLK

Allan, see photo, take their whiskey

with an ‘e' in it, and have just released a second great album on Green Linnet that manages to sound bright, modern and of-the-times while filled with long matured songs, airs and dance music.

The foursome features the remarkable singing and fiddle playing of Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh and her equally impressive flute playing partner Frankie Kennedy. With fretted instrument players Ciaran Curran and Mark Kelly, and recent arrival Paul D'Shaunessy on second fiddle, the group’s exquisite music is rooted in the Donegal Gaeltacht, the songs in Irish, with a good sprinkling of the Donegal Scots influence in the ‘Highland’ reels, even a strathspey or two.

Mairead's delicate, winsome vocal, to a simple, telling guitar accompaniment, is one of the most beautiful sounds in British folk music. The tunes and airs are played to an infectious, and never urgent rhythmic precision, making this group, sans gimmicks, the most satisfying exponents of the traditional music of these Islands to appear for sometime. Skill, respect and taste will out.

Over to play two Maylest concerts, on the 13th and 14th, Allan stop off first in

Allan (13 1514 May) Edinburgh for a concert on the 12th.

Mayfest, in association with Furstenberg, have organised some good music for free round selected Glasgow pubs, and not all in the Centre or the West End. They have booked a spread of high quality performers such as Tonight At Noon, Zydeco Ceilidh Band, and Jook Street Jug. See Maytest Listings.

And check out what's going on in The Shed, down in the Merchant City. A packed programmme over the three weeks includes the Wellpark Suite, Aly Gain and Phil Cunningham, Ossian and Dougie Maclean. Again, see Mayfest listings. (Norman Chalmers).
