with other meals paid for via a group kitty (cooking services are provided). The kitty covers a number of other expenses, and each group-member’s fee is worked out in advance. Tropical Trails (60 Cumberland Street, Edinburgh EH3 6RE 031 556 2889). Another Edinburgh-based company which has recently started up, Tropical Trails operate walking and wildlife safaris in Northern Tanzania. A permanent base camp near the edge of Arusha National Park provides the starting point for expeditions to various sights and scenes in the area. The company aims to give participants ‘the true taste ofAfrica, the Africa that few tourists ever see’. Most expeditions are walking safaris, whereby local guides lead the group along old ‘tropical trails’ over mountains, across plains and through rain forests. The 15 day safari costs £1,278 (ex London, with add-on fares from Scotland). The price includes insurance and food and transport for the tour.

Emphasis seems to be on getting to know a smallish area well, rather than hurtling across the continent, and on cultural exchange with the locals.

High Adventure (91 Telford Avenue, London SW2 4XN 01 674 8997).

Six fairly strenuous treks form the basis of High Adventure’s

programme. They do in fact cater for all levels of ability from recreational walkers to experienced mountaineers and are happy to discuss the sort of fitness required. The six treks all last a minimum on3 days, and all take place in the Karakoram range of mountains on the Sino-Pakistan border. Porters, who carry food and general supplies, accompany the trekking group, which enables them to go right into the unpopulated, untrodden regions of the range. The porters also prepare the food. Walking, rock-climbing or mountaineering options enable people to pursue their own interests. Prices average out at around £1400. Insurance is not included, although food and basic equipment is.

Transglobal (64 Kenway Road, London SW5 0RD 01 244 8571 ). Transglobal have two brochures, one on India and Nepal and one on

Egypt, Israel and Turkey. They have opted to focus on specific countries for their packages, instead of trying to cover the globe. Within that brief, they can offer all sorts of activities camel safaris, bicycle rides, elephants, trekking, trains, canoeing and boats. Accommodation in India and Nepal consists of either tents, hotels or Transglobal’s new houseboat on Lake Nagin. There are 14 tours in the India/Nepal programme, which last between 8 and 29 days. The one week trips (costing around £800) include Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, a Nepal Safari, Goa or a holiday in the house-boat. The overland tours seem to be whistle-stop ones the longer the holiday, the more ground covered. One week holidays also feature strongly in the Egypt, Israel and Turkey brochure. For £495 (ex London) you can do a Nile Safari, for around £450, you can get a glimpse

Hann Overland (201/203 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SW1V 1BR 01 834 7337).

As well as an adventure holiday service to destinations all around the world, Hann Overland also operate chartered flights (phone 01 834 7367 for further details). Adventure groups are limited to 24 people. India, Nepal (with a long-trek option), Tibet, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South-East Asia, Thailand, Africa and Turkey are stock adventure holiday destinations, with Burma, Vietnam and Borneo providing more unusual alternatives. Prices and duration of trips cover the spectrum. Each year, Hann Overland conducts an ‘exploratory’ tour to somewhere new. This year’s tour goes to Brazil and lasts 28 days. The footnote to the brochure states promisingly: ‘These exploratory trips are not for the squeamish’. The ground cost for this one is £1400, to which you add the price of your international flight. Most Hann Overland tours are listed on this basis, so it’s easy to add several tours together, and pursue particular interests.
