I Fright Night 11 ( 18) (Tommy Lee Wallace. US. 1988) Roddy McDowall. William Ragsdale. Julie Carmen. Ragsdale has been in therapy for three years to conv ince himself that the events 11‘ Tom Holland's original movie. where he and former horror movie star .‘vchow all dispatched Chris Sarandon‘s suav e vampire. were just a dream. Now. however. he finds hirnsell and his friend the subject of the seductive attentionsof the demons sister. who‘s thirsting for revenge. Rather hackneyed sequel to a pretty rollicking forerunner. which substitutes a sense ofold-tashioned ghoulish glee with a eharmlessoverdose on (adtnittedly excellent ) special effects that will beguile only the most undemanding audience. Strathclydc: WM R Film Centre.

I The German Sisters ( 15 ) ( Margarethe \'ori'1‘rotta.W.(iermany. 1981 )Jutta Lampe. Barbara Sukowa. Rudiger Vogler. 107 mins. 'l‘wo contrasting sisters. feminist journalist Lampe and Baader Meinhofactiv'ist Sukow a. are brotight closer together when the latter is imprisoned and goes on hunger strike. Though possibly more meaningful at home this absorbing film is a serious discussion of personal commitment and the means by which we bring about change in society. Edinburgh: l-‘ilmhouse.

I Heaven‘s Gate ( la) (.Miehael Cimino. US. 1981)) Kris Kristofferson. Christopher Walken. Isabelle lluppert. 219 mins. Extraordinary full-length 70mm version of Cimino's notoriously expensive w estern. which looks at the conflict between immigrant settlersin 19th century Wyoming and the aristocratic empire-builders who want them swept out of their way. Absolutely stunning photography and a wealth of period detail almost make up for the rather thin central narrative. A film to be seen and savoured despite the critical drubbing it hasoftcn been subjected to. Iidinburgh: Filmhouse. I Hellraiseu lh’) (Clive Barker. L'K. 1987) Andy Robinson. Claire l liggins. Ashley Laurence. 92 mins. A horror picture with a well-constructed plot. strong characters. haunting images and special effects that actually serve the storyline. Minor blemishes along the way. but an auspicious debut from w riter Cliv e Barker. Iidinburgh: Cameo.

I Her Alibi ( P( i ) ( Bruce Bercsford. LS. 1988) Tom Selleck. Paulina Porizkov a. William Daniels. 98 mins. Selleck playsa shy btit successful detectiv e thriller writer Philip Blackwood who's been stuck for inspiration since his w ife left him and so goes out into the naked city in search ofa story. And he finds it in the shape ofNina (Porizkov a). an enigmatic foreign beauty currently on a murder charge. but for whom the smitten Blackwood isprepared to offer an alibi by fabricating details ofa relationship between the pair. a move which is only to place his life in peril.

Predictable writer detective shennanigans. but Selleck handles it all rather painlessly. Cilasgow: Cannon Sauehiehall Street. Iidinburgh: Cannon. Strathclydc: AMC Clydebank It).

I High Hopes ( 15) (Mike Leigh. L'K. 1988) Philip Davis. Ruth Sheen. Iidna Dore. llcather'l'obias. 110 mins. The state ofcontemporary Britain as seen through the eyes of Mike Leigh is summed up in the foibles and divisions ofasingle family. Cyril (Davis) and Shirley (Sheen) are a wholesome left-w ing. working-class couple. persevering in looking after his ageing mother (Dore ). who has been neglected by her appalling nouv‘eau riche daughter Valerie (Tobias). and tensions come to a head at the old lady‘sbirthday party.

Caustic and at times excruciatingly painful comedy of social embarrassment. though the withering satire rather unsubtly’ signposts w hose side we are

meant to be on. A decidedly patchy return to the big screen for one of Britain's most individualistictalents. Central: Regal.

I Highlander( 15) Christopher Lambert. Beatie Iidney . Sean Connery. 116 mins. A handful of immortals battle through the centuries to win a mythical prize. A curious mixture of romance in lmh century heather and car chases in present day New York. the film is an inelegant. often ludicroUs. but enjoyably daffy fantasy adventure. Lambert seems more at home with the contemporary passages and only the ev er wonderful Connery has the requisite sty 1e for the kitsch Scottish scenes. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I The Hitcher( 18) ( Robert Mandel. L's. 198(1) Rutger flatter. C. Thomas I lowell. Jennifer Jason Leigh. 9b’ mins. Charlotte ((iainsbourg) isashy and gaw ky thirteen year-old living w ith her father and older brother. When famous piano prodigy Clara. a girl herown age. comes to town. she decides to pursue her idol and the consequences are entirely unexpected. Sensitive and charming stuff. with a wonderful performance by the young Ms (iainsbourg. Iidinburgh: l‘ilmhouse.

I Jean De Florette ( P( i ) (Claude Berri. I-‘rance. 1986) (ierard Depardicu. Yves Montand. Daniel Autcuil. 121 mins. Provence. during the 1920s. Depardieu's indomitable hunchback struggles against impossible odds to make a success of his inherited farmland. unaware that his apparently friendly neighbours are secretly planning to drive him from his land. Beautifully photographed with

flaw less performances. this is a towering tribute to the highest aspirationsof traditional l‘rench storytelling. Strathclydc: ()deon Ay r.

I The Last Emperon 15 i ( Bernardo Bertolucci. Italy China. 1937’) John 1.one. Peter()"I‘ooledoanChen. 1th mins. A mere 59 years later. however. he dies a humble gardener in a China that is now the Maoist People's Republic. Intelligent epic following the self-delusion and re-education of a man shaped by a superseded power structure. A little cold perhaps. btit the production and cinematography are of such exquisiteness that one only wishes the film were longer. Iidinburgh: Cannon.

I Love On The Dole ( PU i (John Baxter. IJK. 19-11 ) Deborah Kerr. Clifford Evans. (ieorge Carney. 101) mins. It took the war to make \Valtcr (irccnwood's novel tlftllc depression acceptable to the British censors. though even then its portrayal of a working-class Lancashire family 's struggle through the hard timesof unemployment made it a rare problem picture for the period.
