THE FRENCH COLLECTION
Obviously getting into the European spirit, Scottish choir Cappella Nova return from their current trip to Niirnberg just in time for their French Collection, a series of six concerts in Glasgow to celebrate, yes, what else, the bicentenary of the French Revolution. Opening on Thursday 13 July— the eve of the Revolution —the concerts are not solely the province of Cappella Nova and, indeed, the opening performance is given over to Sallord College Wind Band, whose programme includes Francois Gossec's scoring of La Marseillaise. The final concert too is by a visitor, the highly acclaimed organist Jennifer Bate (see photo) who gives the first performance in Scotland of Messiaen’s Livre du Saint Sacrement. Alter giving the first British performance in Messiaen’s presence in 1986, the composer was so impressed he invited her to record the work and Bate has since been in demand touring it internationally. Cappella Nova themselves give three concerts, with works mainly by Durullé, Poulenc and Fauré, each programme also including more French organ music. ’lt’s a fitting 1989 tribute from Glasgow to France“, says director Alan Tavener, 'and I'm sure it will also help everyone get in the right mood for 1990- even if it is a little early.’ (Carol Main)
