GLASGOW FOLK FESTIVAL

The 1989 Glasgow Folk Festival which starts on 3 July centres round the evening concerts in The Shed. Situated behind the City Hall, in Blackfriars Street, The Shed will operate in the same way as at Maylest, with a bar, food, at least one concert per day and weekend ceilidh dances. Continental dance groups will perform at some of the concerts and in various outdoor locations.

In Bell Street, The Blackfriars Bar's second, downstairs bar will operate each night as a Festival Club with live music where performers and punters can have a late drink. There will also be organised sessions in the 'tolk' pubs, Victoria Bar, Scotia, Babbity Dowster, Blackfriars and Heilan Jessie’s. On Saturday the Victoria Bar hosts a traditional singing competition, while across the road the Scotia is the venue lorthe Chorus Cup Competition, the prize awarded to the singer who by lair means or tool generates the greatest vocal enthusiasm in the audience/participants.

Main concerts leature the first performance in Glasgow lor ten years of one of Scotland's longest-lasting and incessantly-touring bands, the Tannahill Weavers on 3 July; Dougie Maclean's new band sharing a spot on the 4th with the Hungarian band

Hungary's 'Makvirag'

Makvirag, no strangers in Scotland,with their van load oi exotic instruments; John Martyn‘s completely unique vocal and guitar style on the 7th, as well as Ireland’s Altan, Caliche‘s music from Chile, Scotland’s Cilla, Artie and the Whistlebinkies, throughout the weekend. You might also bump into a balalaika or two lrom nostov-on-Don during the first week of July. Performing music and dance in concert and in the parks and squares, they are in Glasgow as part of the twinning link between the two cities.
