_ GALA JAZZ GOES EAST

Dueens Hall, Edinburgh, 30 June. While Glasgow enjoys the last three days of its third International Jazz Festival (see Listings) Edinburgh’s Dueens Hall celebrates 10 years of music making, and its position as Scotland's major jazz venue (the best outside London) with a gala concert featuring Britain’s queen of mainstream and ballad Carol Kidd, Dick Lee's Django outfit Swing’89 and baritone saxophone star Joe Temperley who has been wooed back to Scotland from the Big Apple by Channel 4 and the Glasgow Jazz Festival.

Take The Jazz Train presenter and tenor player Gordon Cruikshank has organised the Dueens Hall Big Band which is a feature of the celebration. ‘We’re doing a radio session with Joe Temperley while he‘s here, then in the Dueens Hall he’ll sit in with the band, playing baritone and soprano. Phil Bancroft, he's just amazing, will play tenor, with Jimmy Woods and myself taking the alto parts. It‘s more of a chamber big band really-four saxes, fourtrumpets, two trombones, piano, bass and drums. But it's going to be great, we’re doing trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar’s charts. I’m leaving the decision of what we do up to him, he's got lots to choose from. Years of playing with the top bands. No worries. He's one of the best horn, brass

arrangers in Britain, no, Europe.

Dueens of Music: Carol Kidd, Edinburgh's Dueens Hall Gala Jazz Evening.

Anyone who wrote for that early 60s’ Tubby Hayes band has got to be more than all right.‘

The man who more than any other (though Mike Hart of the EIJF must be mentioned) is responsible for bringing international quality jazz to Scotland, and creating the Dueens Hall’s identity as a major European jazz venue is Assembly Music's err-Platform director Roger Spence. Planning is well ahead for his autumn season, with some of the biggest names, including the return of Sonny Rollins, already lined up for this August's Round Midnight Series.
