MUSIC LIST/FOLK

ROCKING CELTS

In one 01 those phases where the pop charts rellect an influx ol lolk rootsiness, and a raggle taggle army ol‘ embryonic acoustic musicians emerges inthe wake olthe Waterboys. let's look at two home grown ways of putting rockintotolkorvice versa.

Dave Robb‘s brand of declamatory songwriting has a contemporary ring. Add the sound of his urgent, rhythmic bouzouki accompaniment, the bass player from now-defunct Swamptrash,

a percussionist who used to play with ThatSwing Thang, and a girlliddler, and you have the band he takes to Glasgow‘s Star Club on the 20th, and London‘s Mean Fiddlerin August.

Much heavier, with a sound that goes back to the Fairport era of pompous folk-rock, is Avalon. Lead singer Erne Parkin was back home in Glasgow from theirDanishtour.

‘ltisa goodthing, allthis new wave, accordions and stuff. but I don‘t think it's anything special. . .justgood time 1' music.

‘We are more of a rock band; two

guitars, bass drums and violin... Celtic rock I suppose. Horslips was a big influence, and we have a strong Scots/lrishness inthe material we write. I generally come up with the lyrics but it‘s a group etlort putting the songs together. The last album, ‘Heavy Heart‘, was more or less Green issues, butwiththe Celtic mythology creeping in.

‘We go down a storm in Denmark. The festival lastweek had Santana. Little Feat, Tracy Chapman . . .we were playing to upwards 0110.000 people, and that was on the lolk stage. There were 70,000 there altogether. Like Woodstock. And we‘ve been asked back next year, but I thinkthey want us onthe rock stage nexttime.

‘Yetourapproachturns as many pe0ple off. We don‘t get asked to do the Scottishlolktestival3~because we‘re too electric.‘

Avalon play Edinburgh on the 15th. and lorsix days during the August Festival. (Norman Chalmers)
