Springburn Museum. Glasgow. When MarkO‘Neill. the innovative curatorof Springburn Museum. commissioned artistJoseph Davietodepictmodern Springburnhisonlyproviso wasthat ‘Davie should 'includetowerblocks. somethingtodowiththe museum and covera geographical areafrom Sighthillto Red Road.‘

Using a variety of media. Davie. a foundermemberofthe Lighthouse Studiola Glasgowbased co-operative). produced eight works in two months. Togetherthey offera resonanticonography ofSpringburn lifestyle: includingan affectionate satire ofafootballteam whose young players include ‘Pele McGuire. 'Johnny Ace‘ and ‘Young Kenny'. a bustling brightenamel ofa smoke—filled 37 bus and a contrasting picture of a desolate petrol station. In his colourfulfigurative workDavie conveysthe warmth and spiritotthe community. whilstthe austere drabness othis landscape isa bleak commentonthe area‘s economic depnvahon.

'We believe in lookingforward‘. says O'Neill ofthe museum. which has recentlybeen voted bestmuseum of industrial orSocial Historyinthe British Museum of the Year Awards. ‘Werecord change in Springburn. decline and growth. and wanted an artistic impression otthis. Davie's work capturesthatsense ofhumour which enables peopleto withstand dificulttimes.’

Davie enjoyed the challenge. ‘There was such a necessity to produce somethingwhich local people could

Davie is also currently exhibiting at the Glasgow PrintStudioin King Stret withfourotherartists.
