CDCKNEY REBEL

Double Trouble and The Rebel MC, Calton Studios, Edinburgh, Friday 28. Calton Studios opens up both lloors lor Friday 28’s all-nighter, with the sought-alter Yogi spinning the discs alongside guest DJs brought in from around the country. The main attraction, though, is a live appearance by Double Trouble (aka Leigh Guest, Michael Manson and tor live dates Carl Brown) and The Rebel MC, whose unusual ska-style hip hop hit ‘Just Keep Rockin', is only just slipping back down the charts.

In addition to theirlive show (notiust a personal appearance), Guest and Menson will be doing a hall-hour DJ-ing spot—no greatchallenge for them, as they have been working a roadshow around the clubs lorthe last live years, and gained a reputation for hot live mixes. With the benelit at their club experience they some time ago decided to set up theirown studio, Noisegate, where they honed their skills and taught their craft to budding mixers. ltwasn't long before Double Trouble were creating their tamed mega-mixes tor compilation LPs on the Serious label and supplying weekly ten-minute mixes lor Chris Forbes' Capital Radio show, in between

remixing successlul singles like Bam-Bam‘s ‘Give itto Me'. The lure ol recording themselves soon became too strong to resist.

Mike West, orThe Rebel MC, ran a successlul sound system at his own long betore he picked up 3 mike himsell, and he was to ensure his roots were well to the lore when he embarked on a recording career. His lirst single, a collaboration with T'n'T Roadshow member Ron Samuels which naturally acquired the name Mikron, was a rap version ol the ‘Eastenders’ tune which was quickly embargoed by the BBC—though it was a hit on pirate stations. The next single was the lirst written and produced with Double Trouble, and ‘Cockney Rythmn' turned outto be a home-grown hip hop/reggae collision that staked out a little piece at territory lor the British in an American- dominated scene. The Rebel MC West made no bones about rapping in his native dialect.

Since then Double Trouble have released a single in their own right, ‘Feel the Music, Feel the Bass’, but as their stint on the wheels at steel at the Calton Studios will show, they haven‘t lost their crowd-pleasing ability lor live mixing, with or without the MC's help.
