In ‘The CookThe Thieins Wife and Her Lover‘ Peter Greenaway has made a film guaranteed to offend everybody. Beautifully art-directed. photographed, produced and acted. it nevertheless deals with the kind of subjectmatterusually onlyfound under the counteratyourlocalvideo nasty dealer. Asidefromthe Marquis de Sade. who would have approved of the indescribany ghastly finale, notto mention the shivering nude couple being locked in a van with a load of rotting meat, the film echoes Poe‘s ‘Masque of the Red Death‘, even to the extentofplaying games with different-coloured rooms (the characters‘ clothes fantastically change colour to match the decor as they walkthrough doors) derivedfrom the RogerCorman movie.
Undoubtedly. this achieves everything it sets outto do, but it is goingto winfewfriends. This isthe firstGreenawayfeaturethatcouldn‘t possibly be shown, even with a red triangle and severe warnings about ‘some scenes may give offence‘ on Channel 4, and the more conservative critics are bound to cluck about the expenditure ofacting and film-making talent on so unpalatable a film. It‘s compulsive and unforgettable, but you‘d be hard-pressedto like thething. See it and make up your own mind. (Kim Newman)
